Twelve ways to cut costs

By Darla Youngblood

  • Look at your income and find ways to save money . Pay yourself first
  • Track your spending to see where you spend money the most and find ways to cut back. Groceries are a good area to focus on and find ways to make cheaper meals.
  • Make a budget. Decide what amount of money to spend on each thing. Put your money in categories. For instance utilities, groceries , gas, etc. Then work to stay within those limits.

    Invest for your future.
Invest small amounts until your comfortable in an amount that works with your finances

Buy high quality products that will last for instance like furniture or appliances.

Find ways to increase your income. Add a hobby you can make money on and enjoy . Don’t be afraid to ask for a raise or extra hours . By increasing your income you can save more money and pay off debt.

Pay off debt as quick as possible to become debt free.
  • Make goals early so you can save and pay cash for instance for a vacation or Christmas
  • Think ahead to your future self and needs. For example like buying a minivan you can add a lift in for a wheelchair or a house or apartment that is wheelchair accessible. It’s always good to think about the future and all you will need.

Think before you spend. Ask yourself is this something I really need or just want. Keep in mind your future goals with everything you spend money on.

Plan ahead for costs with pets for vet visits and shots. Have a budget category just for pets
  • Another budget area is transportation not just for gas but for maintenance of the car. Having money saved for maintenance on a car helps so your not caught off guard by a sudden maintenance emergency on your car.
